I recently picked up a model 1898 rifle that was missing the ladder and slider from the rear sight, I ordered what I thought were the correct parts, but the ladder does not fit it is almost as if the base is mounted backwards. any thoughts ?

Who is the manufacture and how is the rifle marked?
It's a Krag, model 1898, so it is made by Springfield, there are no other markings on the base other than on the other side has range markings,

I think you have the base of a M1896 sight.
It might be helpful to know the serial number, but in the meantime, I agree with JimF. It looks like a base for a Model 1896 which would be correct for an 1898 with an early in the model serial number range. I have an 1898 with a '96 sight and the corresponding handguard. Serial number is 129638.
Here's an 1896 carbine sight. Rifle is similar with different graduations.
What you actually have pictured is a very early carbine sight. Note the presence of the “lug” on the proximal end of the ladder. This is a remnant of the earlier 1892 ladder. The next variation of the 1896 is flat there.
BTW, any interest in selling that sight?
'Parashooter' - Lovely pictures of your "humped" model 1896 carbine sight.
'DRAGONFLYDF' - A complete model 1896 rifle sight is relatively easy to find and routinely sells for about $45-$55 on ebay. You can try ''Movieman630" for missing leaf and slide (Joe DeChristopher's grandson).
