What would account for the R instead of the expected S on a 1916 barrel?
A mistake. There are other than the expected S on 1916 barrels. Could be the inspector thought it was a H.?
What do you think it is?
I don't know what it is, but with only the P on the top of the chamber I would have expected an S on a 1916 Colt barrel. What are the others on a 1916 barrel with the P on the chamber?
I also do not know. I would also expect an S --- with the P on top of the chamber. I have not examined a H --- with the P on the chamber. (We know there is a H --- with the P on the back of the lugs.) If it is a mistake, it could a mistake of the S (as well as a mistake of a H).? How many different barrels would be correct for a 1916 M1911?
I was not sure it was a R, but the new picture clears that up. Have you seen this R used before? Do you think it is a Colt barrel?
