    Default Cartridge headstamp information

Five rounds are in a stripper clip and have the head stamp as shown below. The bullet is round nose and appear to be in the 220 grain range. What are these rounds and what rifle were they fired in?

How about a couple of pictures of the cases, bullets and stripper clip please.

Sorry, I don't have a way to take photos, the cartridges as described are at a friends house. He described the items, and he doesn't know how to take photos either.

The rounds would appear to have be made in 1894 by the Deutsche Waffen-U Munitionsfabiken A-G Fruher Lorenz, Karlsruhe Germany. I would suspect that the rounds are 8x57 but that they are the older version with a bullet of .318 diameter having a weight of 226 grs. being a round nose design and not the later 8x57 with a .323 diameter bullet. But without photos it's just a guess.

They could be most anything, consult a 'Cartridges of the World' book. Or take them to a gun show and ask several venders who sell collector cartriges.

Thanks for all the information and opinions. The photo from Dan sure looks nearly like the shape as I saw it. I will go with my friend to a gun show next week end and try to track it down. I tracked down a dial micrometer and will take some dimensions at my friends place before going to the show.

I went to our monthly gun club meeting and verified that the cartridges in question are 7MM Mauser .

Hi. Go here for all things head stamps. http://cartridgecollectors.org/?page=headstampcodes
The original 7mm Mauser used a 173 grain RN at about 2300fps. Karamojo Bell, one of the famous early African hunters, shot elephants and Cape Buffalo with it.
