  1. Default SRS research questions on 03NM

    I know Frank Mallory did an awful lot for us collectors and has since passed on. Is there any ongoing changes to the serial number research or documentation?

    I have always wanted to research this rifle 1903 SA #1406381. I am the third owner and have some paper work of the original owner and his address in IA. I got a verbal story about how the 2nd owner got the rifle and how the owner had bought it to shoot at Perry. He never did. He also had an older model Win 52 that he did shoot at Perry. I never saw that rifle. The 03 came with two 1932 DCM order sheets, identical to what is in Brohpy's book. That would of been the year to have extra money to buy cool stuff from DCM. Also came with PJ O'Hare sight adjuster, rear sight cover, small box from Springfield Armory dated 1932 {barrel date5/32}

    So............any changes or additions to what was available 10 years ago? Rifle in question is the top one. The sling was on it this way, never changed it to different set up. Old pics, sorry for quality of them. John.

    As I recall, Congress failed to appropriate funding and the 1932 National Matches were cancelled at the last minute. The Army scrambled to host some regional matches, but I'm not sure how that came out. If the original owner bought the rifle for the 1932 National Matches, he came out disappointed. The National Matches were not hosted again until 1936.

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for looking. Actually the story on the rifle is he turned in his low numbered RIA for a replacement receiver. Decided to upgrade, he kept his original bolt as they were slicker than the N.S.. In the papers I got with this, was a copy of an old "Rifleman" article about NM rifles and modifications one could get from the then DCM. He scribbled on it "save bolt RIA 1911" or something to that effect. Lynn Merideth critiqued the rifle for me at Perry one year and was very excited. Stated that the rifle had some features that made the story plausible. I think the original owner saved the hardware off his old rifle and had that put on too. Barrel bands, screws.

    The lower rifle has all NM modifications, worked action, N.S. bolt, NM butt plate, 48B Lyman sights. #1208761 with 11/18 AV barrel. Almost pristine condition. Came with story and 1937 Match rule book from the NM at Perry. Supposedly this rifle was bought at Perry from a Navy Lt who was KIA early in war and rifle sat in closet. Obviously the story is free without documentation.

    Story I got was he wanted to shoot it at Perry but never made it to those particular matches. Apparently he was a small bore shooter more than high power and had shot at Perry at least once with that old 52 Winchester.

    Had posted pics of these a number of years back when the 03 board was on fire.
    Thanks, John.

    How about this one! SA #1438179 {SA 4/1930 barrel} CMP presentation/awards rifle. Shot a gold medal that year, but "Adobe Wall" won the 03 match that year. He won the match, I won the rifle. Ha! Never shot it either.
