Unertl question

I've got a line on a Unertl 8x scope. But the guy calls it a "varmint" scope. In everything I read people say they used a Unertl "target" scope for a USMC build. Is there a difference in scopes? Or just in people's terminology?

Ask him for the length and Dia. of the tube at both ends. Then check the specs. for the USMC scope online.

Unertl made a 1.25" Combination Target scope from from 1940 until after 1985. It came in 8, 10, 12 or 14X.
Unertl made a 1.5" Varmint scope from 1950 until after 1985. It came in 6, 8 or 10X. I believe the Varmint model lacked the adjustable objective. The diameter of the objective lens is measured inside the bell, not overall diameter.
Varmint and Target are different models of Unertl scopes. This information is from Old Rifle Scopes by Nick Stroebel.

I believe that the Varmint scope that is being addressed is the Unertl Varmint Scope. The following paragraph is from the 1951 edition of The Book Of The Springfield by Edward C. Crossman as supplemented by Roy Dunlap in 1951. It gives a description of the Varmint Scope.

Don't have a picture of my Unertl 12 power Varmint #61074 which I think is from the mid 1970s? Mine is 2" and 24" long. Have a 2" 20 power Target that is new in box from early 1970's and an older 1940s 8 power much like the USMC sniper, but post WW2 and not USMC marked. The Varmint 12 power was last used at 1000 yds at Lodi, Wi a few years ago. Up until then I had only used M14 type match rifles with the iron/match sites. Using the Unertl was like cheating. Never was any good at reading wind and the range is a tricky one for wind. Had seven X's in a row and had a blast using a scope. 190 gr Sierra's give a stout snap to my neck and take some of the enjoyment out of it. Bad neck injury comes back to haunt sometimes. The scope and technology may be old, but it is pure pleasure using a Unertl. If your an old iron sight shooter, it is indeed like cheating. Coupled with a 1/10 twist Krieger HB, pure joy. If you are looking to reproduce the USMC sniper scope it should have a 1.25" Objective lens and a 3/4" diameter main tube magnification should be 8x but CMP will allow 6x in the vintage sniper match.
