would like to find out about dating the year a carbine was made
You would need to join the carbine club and then buy all of the past issues of the news letters to find out when your carbine was made. There is no other printed material out there that is even close.
Carbine Club Newsletter #337 has a list of the last serial number applied each day at Winchester. Either get the newsletter or post the serial number of the Winchester M1 carbine here and I'll tell you what the list reflects.
12671xx , and 57909xx
Oct '43 and Jan '45 per Ruth/Duff.
thank you
12671XX - 18 Oct 43
57909XX - 16 Sep 44 - last number applied 5790940
18 Sep 44 - last number applied 5791825
But you also have to remember that the dates the serial numbers were applied to the receiver and the carbines were built are different and it can be months between these times.
Hey, Ankhearty...how about 5829423? I'm only asking 'cause it could have been made on my birthday (9/25)...though at that time I was barely a gleam in me father's eye!
jonnyo, according to the newsletter, your carbine was stamped on Nov. 4, 1944
