Oddball A4 Receiver on CMP auction site
Remington prefaced serial numbers with a "Z" whenever a duplicate number was inadvertently created. Everyone is familiar with the batch of about 3000 "Z" rifles in the 4,000,000 range but now there is one up for auction in the 4,99X,XXX range.

Jim, Are you saying there is a confirmable A3 out there with the same serial number less the Z?

No Probably two A4's were made with the same SN . The "Z" would have been applied to one of them at the time of manufacture or very close to it. There are no A3's in the 4,99x,xxx range. However id two A3's got through the system with the same sn then a "Z" is added to the sn. Because of the larger font used on A3 Sn's the "Z" is applied above the first digit instead of in front of it.
Also serial number ranges were assigned to different models in blocks. The so-called "Z" series A4's (4,000,001+ range) came about when A3 production overlapped into the block assigned to the second purchase of A4's. By the time the error was caught the A3's were likely finished, packed and out the door so the decion was made to follow the standard paracice for duplicate sn's and add a "z" to 3000~ A4 receivers.

iv seen one with a C added...in the same range...notice the other with lined out 3 and hand stamped 4?
if it aint broke...fix it till it finally is.

Thanks for the explanation, didn't realize they duplicated some A4's serial numbers. I didn't think there was an A3 in the 4.9 mil range so I was a bit confused on that.

both SC and Remington used letter prefix to cure the duplicate serial numbers, on A3 and A4s.
Z C and X
if it aint broke...fix it till it finally is.
