  1. Default New Mauser on The Way...

Finally, I was able to add a K98 Mauser to my WWII collection. After the frenzy surrounding the non-import Mauser sale at Southern Ohio Gun (SOG) ended, I began a search of my own (again) for a nice Mauser... one that is not peened. Not long after the SOG sale ended, a CMP forum member put up his privately owned Mauser (ce 44). I let it sit on the forum for two days before I made a move... what do you think:

Picture Belongs to a CMP forum member, theese are not mine...only the rifle belongs to me

    wicked stock!!

Bluing is rough, but that's all right... adds to the characer of the rifle...

It was noted as shooter with good lands and grooves...and a dark bore. When my PRVI Partizan ammo comes in, I'll give it a go.

I finaly picked up the Mauser yesterday... the pics are as nice as it gets. All the metal has severe pitting. Pitting to the point the swastikas are pitted out (not peened). There are no matching numbers except for the bolt (I knew that though). Stock is beautiful in the sun, and should last for some time. The bullet test tells me the bore has some life in it, as there is still over a 0.25" of bullet showing... but the bore is dark. The rifling is strong, but what light I could manage down the barrel indicates dust... or rust. With the amount of pitting on the surface of the rifle, I can only assume that the rifle is just as pitted in the bore. I will get to cleaning the bore this evening.

...and this is wierd, but this rifle has ghosts associated with it. I don't iknow how I know that, but I do!

Some candid pics I took of the metal last night...lets start with the bore:

    "For here there be monsters..."

    Galaxies await...

    This can't be good...

The muzzle is pitted, and from this last pic, it looks like the bore may be also. I'll know more when I clean it. Here are some pics of the stamps:
