About 25 years ago we visited Israel and on the first day, we took a walk along the Tel Aviv waterfront. There were two young women walking in front of us and I commented to my wife that they could have been our daughters - both about 19 years old, both wearing jeans, both wearing coloured T shirts and both wearing sneakers. The only difference is that both of them were also wearing M16s. A few days later, we were having dinner at an outdoor restaurant on the Sea of Galilee and I said to my wife that if anybody popped a champagne cork, she should be ready to hit the floor because I had counted 18 people in several groups (all in uniform) who were having dinner and had put their assault rifles on the floor under the table.

I can definitely understand the need for the guns but not long guns vs pistols. Perhaps the thoughts are "look, I'm armed, go away", but wearing a pistol on a holster would do the same and be more handy if SHTF.

Maybe they really like M-16's ?

I suppose everyone there is a soldier on standby---the same thing the Japs allegedly said of us during WW2 "There's a gun behind every blade of grass".

I agree about the pistols. Easier and a lot quicker to get into action.

I think that the regulation is that when a soldier is on leave, he or she must carry their service weapon and a couple of full mags. For most soldiers, the service weapon would not be a handgun. It would appear that this applies even if they are not in uniform

That is MY bad on the pistol comment. I didn't realize the women were soldiers.

It would seem though that Israel has learned it's lesson about strict gun ownership and citizens trained to operate a gun is now welcomed.
