What to use for cleaning it?

Have a stainless steel parkerizing tank, that I can fill will kerosene and using a electric fry pan warm it up to loosen the cosmoline?

Odorless mineral spirits may be a favorable alternative to kerosene. I would suggest cleaning it in stages and not using all your solvent for the first scrub.

Boiling water will make quick work of this job. Never did a barrel, but have had some really gooey surplus rifles to clean. Stripped the wood off before putting everything in the bathtub. Filled with boiling water. Let sit maybe five minutes or so. Lifted out with coat hanger. Metal was so hot it dried itself. Really not at all difficult. HTH. Sincerely. bruce.
