The attached video depicts the circumstances surrounding the death of Ed Masterson and his assailant in Dodge City, Kansas in front of the Lady Gay" saloon. Many modern versions show Ed Masterson killing his assailant but the testimony at the time and the statements of Bat Masterson are pretty conclusive that this short video is an accurate depiction of the way it happened.

Wyatt Earp was asked toward the end of his life how many people Bat Masterson had killed. He then asked the reporter if he'd talked to Masterson and the writer said he had but Masterson wouldn't talk about it. Earp replied that, not counting Adobe Walls it was two. The first involved a soldier and a dispute over a woman. Masterson killed the soldier but took a bullet to the pelvis...the reason he used a cane the rest of his life. The unfortunate woman was killed by a stray shot from the soldier. The second is pretty darn accurately depicted in the video.

Masterson said the most important factor involved in surviving a gunfight was "deliberation." Another version of Wyatt Earp's "take your time quickly" statement.

In this fight Masterson did some remarkable shooting. It was night time and he was across the street from his brother's murder and killed him and seriously wounded his foreman who had pulled a gun. He hit what he was shooting at with every shot. The pistol used in the video is accurate. Masterson ordered his guns directly from Colt. They were 4 3/4" or 5 1/2" barreled nickel plated .45 cal. Single Action Armies with black hard rubber grips. Some of Masterson's pistols survive to this date.
