    Default Cartridge ID please

    picked up a small estate, and got a big double handful of 45-70,

    look to be dudes, as in some have indented primers, most have not been fired,

    headstamp is

    R
    I (primer) 84
    F

    obviously 1884,

    not sure on the rest, (doesn't seem to fit the charts)

    pics when I get a chance

    I believe you have:

    R= Rifle
    1 (primer) 84= January, 1884
    F=Frankford Arsenal

    excellent!!

    thanks,

    guessing if I come across any marked C that would be for Carbine?

    eta,

    I have 96 dated cartridge that just has the F,
    and a 30 Govt (30-40 ) that is just the F,

    both have the year (I assume) stamped apart, so there are only 3 things stamped equal distance apart)

    A very nice little haul! Love those big copper cases. R = Rifle, C = Carbine, F = Frankford Arsenal. Left number is month, right number is year. Quad HS came first and appears on Benet (inside) Berdan (RARE) and Boxer (common) primed cases. After the 500 gr. bullet was adopted for the rifle in 1881, and the wads were removed from the carbine in 1886, the rounds could no longer be confused and the R & C were dropped from the HS.
