I'm late to this thread, but I was recently clarifying model 1887 sling installation on the Krag Collectors Association forum.
I think this Rock Island Arsenal drawing, from 1889, gives a very clear image of the Trapdoor Springfield sling arrangement, both when 'taut' and when 'loose' for shoulder carry.
