    Default The Iron Lady

2011 film about the life of Margaret Thatcher.

It's well produced and directed, Meryl Streep is brilliant as usual, and the film shows a high degree of historical accuracy; but in subtle ways I found the movie to be a hit piece. Mainly in that shows Thatcher's life through memories in her last years when she was ravaged by dementia and, in this version, haunted by hallucinations of her dead husband.

The plot device of the old ruler, abandoned, alone and demented goes back at least to "Lear." It's tragedy. The audience is supposed to experience pity, fear and regret, and then catharsis.
