It's called "fakery", "restoration", or "reproduction", take your pick.

I thought as much, but have to admit it did look good. I wonder if you would mind giving us an idea of what inspector, serial number and barrel date appeared as Remington 1903 production progressed? I find these rifles very interesting, but do not know of any reference aimed at these rifles in particular (unless you are working on one?).
Thank You!
+1 with JB! Its a shame.....
The approximate serial ranges are:
Boxed RLB - S/N 3000000 to S/N 3064000
Spread Unboxed R L B - S/N 3064000 to S/N 3150000
Closely-Spaced Unboxed RLB - S/N 3090000 to S/N 3200000
Boxed FJA - S/N 3200000 up
Unboxed FJA - S/N 3280000 up
Some overlap can be expected.

Thanks John!
The closely-spaced unboxed RLB is very scarce below S/N 3150000. But it does exist. Beware of stock replacements. But it's virtually exclusive above S/N 3150000.
Also, a couple of boxed RLB stamps appeared at S/N 3150000. But I am unable to authenticate or unauthenticate them.
