It was issued for survival rifle/shotgun combination weapons. They (military) needed a full metal jacket and could not
use a lead bullet. I am sure there might have been other applications for the cartridge in the military

I know this is an old post, but the Army had a .22 barrel insert used to qualify with the M-16 in locations without a real range. A little off topic but they also had an insert for the 4.2 mortar that fired 60 mm mortar rounds and one using compressed air that could be fired in a big building.

Very strange to see a heeled FMJ bullet.

Somewhere in my plunder I have a box of military .22 Hornet soft point ammunition. It has a warning on the box not to be used against enemy combatants.

used to have one of those survival rifles in the shop,
had to Form it, since the barrel was less than 16"
