Rather then buy guns from Kleins or others, you could buy the M1903A3 rifle for $14.95 and an old
rebuilt M1911A1 for about double the 1903A3 price from the DCM
Later the M1 carbines for around $20 if NRA member in 1961-62
Even later the trade-in M1 rifle receiver that was damaged for a like new M1 receiver and barrel, this
would cost around $20 through the NRA in 1974-75
I remember the $14 ads in Field & Stream and Outdoor Life, I've even got copies around somewhere. Why would the NRA membership be mad a out being able to get the 03s cheaper from DCM?

For PWC
Because M1's through the DCM cost $98 + $4.00 shipping and handling plus express charges and took months and lots of paper work and correspondence to acquire , you had to be a NRA member and you took what you got - not refunds, non adjustments -Even thought they were NM M1's . If the allotment was sold - three eggs , one GOOD, TWO BAD.

OK, now I understand....as a kid, $14 may as well have been $1000...
Given what you say, if I'd had the money I'd have gone the $14 route too.
Used to read about Jack O'Connor and his .270 a d dream of my own 03.
The only thing the NRA got out of the deal was it helped promote membership the guns came from government arsenals. Needing to be a NRA member was kind of a early background check. If I remember right that was how the lefties got it shut down somebody sued because he couldn't buy one without being a NRA member. That was a long time ago and my memory my be a little off.
That's almost $685 in today's dollars after adjusting for inflation.. No small amount of money.
Today will be the good old days in a few years. I remember when the Danes and CMP began grading Garands as the high point of the M1 collecting days.
