  1. Post USMC Rock Island rifle check

Good day all, About a year ago a friend in New Mexico contacted me about a possible USMC '03 he had found. After contacting John Beard about the particulars of the rifle I bought it and since have been doing research into it. Here are some of the things I have found-

RIA Serial #- 367679, Receiver has Hatcher hole bored in it, S/A 8/42 barrel in very good condition, bolt is a Remington with the #828911 electro penciled on the bolt body. The barrel has pipe wrench marks on it from removal/installation. The stock is the "S" type with "P" proof stamped behind trigger guard and it is in pretty good condition, with a N/M butt plate that is also stippled. Anything someone could add to help with learning the history of this rifle would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Bill

Sounds like a very classic rebuild. The Remington bolt that is serialed is sort of interesting. You don't see that often.

Is the buttplate the coarse type? I've seen the early style checked that were also stippled, but haven't seen the heavy coarse, often referred to as the NM style stippled. That is a new one to me.

The Marines actually in the 30's used to mill the flat buttplates into a checkered pattern. This was of course before the stippling as the stippling seems to have been done in WWII era just to save time.

One of mine, SA # 984656, SA 7-27 bbl., has a Remington bolt with rifle number on it.

Steve, Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. The butt plate on the rifle is not the coarse one, it is the finer checked butt plate. It only has about 10 center punch marks on it and they are closer to the edge of the plate. The marks are no longer sharp, they have been worn down. I had some doubts about the rifle, especially the Remington bolt, but after contacting J.B. he told me that the information I had supplied showed to him that it was a USMC '03. I wondered about the bolt, but John said that the USMC did not worry too much about mixing parts as long as the rifle functioned and gaged alright that in their eyes it was good to re-issue after it was rebuilt.
    Regards, Bill

wondering if it is a Greek Return rifle?
I have seen a handful of those that had a serial number (usually matching the receiver) electro penned on the bolt body

The greek serial numbers I've seen were EP'd on the top of the bolt handle.

Don't know much about it. I spied it on RIA auction set for 03 Jan. They say
it has a SA 10-42 barrel. I do own SA 1025654. Mine has a SA 12-27 barrel and
    stippled BP.
