Default WW I German vintage Mauser.....

I would like to aquire a WWI Rifle that could have been used by the Germans in WWI. I would assume it would be a type of Mauser, but I really dont know?
I have mostly US stuff but want something representative of a WWI German rifle.
I just watched "All Quiet On The Western Front" and they all pretty much looked like Turkish Mausers. Are they about the same thing?
Of course I want a German used one.
How are they marked, What model? Are there any around to be had??
What should I be looking for?
Thanks so much for any help you can give me.

    Hi Brad,

You should look for an Karabiner 98a, a Gewehr 88 or a Gewehr 98. Here are a few Links:

    http://www.texastradingpost.com/m88/index.html

http://www.gewehr98.com/ Here you find pics and info`s to the Karabiner 98a too

    http://www.cruffler.com/trivia-December99.html Here are regimental markings

    Hope it helps a bit.

May not be what you are looking for, but these are old mausers and you can order without an FFL, but not sure about history, originality or condition.

By far the most used German rifle in WW1 was a Gew. 98. The Kar was for special troops (engineers and mounted for two.) and was less common. A Gew 88 (not really a Mauser)would have been a second line weapon, seldom, if ever used on the front. They can be found altho nice matched and original examples are scarce and getting expensive. Kars are even harder to come by in such condition. Sportsman guide I think are selling some south amer. contract rifle. Do a Google for Gew98 Maused rifle.

    Default Gewehr 98s

I currently have two WW1 vintage Gewehr 98s, both bought at local auctions over the last few years. One, a 1918 dated Waffenfabrik Mauser is in original configuration while the other, a 1916 dated Simson was reworked in the Weimar era. Both have excellent bores and cost me $120.00 and $200.00 respectively.

The moral here is that they are out there. I would watch for estate sales on auctionzip.com

You got steals on both! I think the auction people do research around here. Trouble is, they use top price no matter condition or if original.

Original un-reworked Gew 98's will have receivers and bolts in the white, the rest blued...it will have the Lange "Roller Coaster" sight....

They are out there, and don't command the prices of 98k's, but they aren't common. If you can stay away from "Turked" examples...go to Gunboards, there is both a very good Mauser board, and a WWI Weapons board for more research...
