Probably around 1960 my grand uncle shot a bear inside his cottage near Minong, WI. Only wounded it so at first light everybody in the area was out tracking.
The next night I awoke yelling the bear was back in the house. It was only my grandmother. Snoring. They didn't shoot her, but one of the neighbors dropped the wounded bear earlier that evening.

I get a kick from the guy in the story. Doesn't hunt but had a gun just in case. One of those times when he was glad to have it rather than wished he had.

I would think 00 buck. Slugs would be good but if he never fired that firearm the hit probability with the 00 buck would be greater.
