I have a WW1 1897 trench gun with the metal replacement buttplate. The stock is the high comb WW1 type that also has a P proof mark on the bottom of the pistol grip. There are no other arsenal marks on the stock. I assume the gun was proof fired when the metal buttplate and/or stock was replaced.
Tom, I have a WW2 trench gun 97 stock marked the same way.
With the P and no other markings.

The proof on mine is a non-serif P in a circle. And it was stamped on the bottom flat of the pistol grip like San Antonio Arsenal did, except the San Antonio proof P is usually in a box.
On my Mod 97 riot (E10193XX) pushing the slide forward slightly before retracting the slide is required. Geoff in DE
Been away a very long time. I have a 97 'WB' cartouched stock. I would like to trade for a like condition 'GHD' stock. Anyone know where I might look?
