  1. Default Springfield Mark I stock marking...

This Mark I came into the local gun store earlier in the week. It appears to be a re-parked rebuild with a Remington bolt and rear sight. The stock is stamped with the letters "S.P.l." in a rectangular cartouche. Anyone know who or what it represents? Here are some pics.

The rifle has been overhauled, refinished, and re-assembled from mixed parts. The inspection stamp is very questionable. I'm not prepared to say it's fake, but it sure looks fake. I recall having seen an "S.P.L." stamp that was unusual, but perhaps authentic. But not an "S.P.I." stamp.

    Hope this helps.

What kind of hand guard is that? From the pictures, it looks like it does not have a groove in front of the rear sight.

The handguard is a WWII Booher handguard that has been ground down on top.

I vote for spurious marking. The stock looks very flat on the left side. Note the stock bolt is shiny from sanding. The right side stock bolt shown in one pic is well recessed as should be.
