Yes the WWI barrels were modified from British spec to handle the Cal.30 ammo.
WWII barrels were made for both the 03 and 17 to the upgraded spec of _two groove rifling as it allowed faster manufacturing and meet accuracy sped.
HS did make barrel for the 17 only ( careful, I had been known to be wrong! ) using the four-groove specs.

Did see in 2005 a Rem 17 with a "19" date Win barrel. Didn't buy it for I didn't have the cash.

I saw this thread the other day and remembered that I had a new 1917 barrel somewhere in the piles. It is a five groover, marked Eddystone, with a date of 12-18. There are other markings if a photo would help anyone.

I just found a mint, uninstalled 5-groove Winchester 1-19 barrel. A 95-yr old virgin. The rifling cutter marks are visible, the lands razor sharp. It's going on a D&T'd Winchester action for a modified military cast bullet match rifle. I will size a little over groove diameter - Can't wait to see how it will shoot.

My HS barrel is the best shooting 17 barrel I have seen. If I do my part it will put five together that I can cover with a 5 cent piece. If memory serves correct it is a 4 grove WWII production barrel.
