Thread: Barrel Mark

  1. Default Barrel Mark

I have a 1903 with a barrel that has SA, ordnance bomb, 05, A, on it. I know it is a 1905 Springfield barrel but what does the 'A' mean?

When the rifle went thru refurb, the barrel was deemed "Acceptable" for use. I have a RIA with the same marking.

Budmant's explanation is correct. I will point out, however, that the "A" re-appeared during and after WWI. The meaning apparently changed, but the new meaning is unknown.

Okay, I admit it, I have a good case of can't remember chit (CRS) disease.. but doesn't a 1903 barrel dated 1905 have the original 1903's .30-03 chambering?

Very highly unlikely. The 1905-dated barrels were shortened and re-chambered to .30-'06. Very few were missed.
