Default Punch mark before serial number

What does a punch mark at the beginning of the serial number mean? I know I've seen it discussed before, but do to being close to retirement, can't remember!

    Thanks,

In most cases, a punch mark in front of a serial number is a reasonable indication of USMC issuance. In a few cases, it may mean that an enterprising nefarious Bubba had a hammer, a punch, and a few extra minutes.

    Hope this helps.

I suffer from CRS, but, didn't they do punch marks on early
    receivers to test for brittleness?

    John,

Have you (or anyone else) discovered why the Marine Corps may have put that punch mark there? (inquiring minds need to know )

If memory serves me right, the punch mark meant it had been rebarreled.

The serial number and barrel date match for 1934. I too would like to know the reason for the mark!
