Very interesting story, more photos of the rifle would be nice for better evaluation of the rifle.

Absolutely document it as is by photo's and then clean it off and shoot it and clean it again and admire it. It was meant to be fired.

Years ago, I bought a HB 40XB rifle in 22 cal. in the original RIA box. The rifle was wrapped up in a white VCI preservative bag dated 1967, and came with original Remington parts breakdown, schematic, and some other literature... Threw a 1907 sling & Remington 20x scope on her and still have it... Great find, OP...enjoy it. These rifles are tack drivers..

I have three very nice ones I would trade. Just don't clean an shoot, you will totally kill the value by as much as 2/3. Keep every scrap.
