I would say it left the factory as a riot gun, and cutts put on after military service.

It does look like the way it left the factory as a skeet gun, not like compensator was installed later. It looks like from J Harrison's book page 122 "US Military Arms". But there is not much factory or research info available on these shotguns.

A skeet gun with a "CYL" choke?

Actually both us maybe wrong: in Mr. Campbell's book about Military Shotguns on page 118 it is mentioned that in 1944 some 991 Rem 31 riot shotguns were converted into skeet training shotguns per Army request.

Serial number range and markings please.

  7. Default Rem 31

Ser number range is 58 xxx, all markings are exactly the same as on the Rem 31 with Cutts compensator shown in J. Harrisson's book, except instead of an ancor there is some other symbol.

    Thank you,

    Thank you,
The serial is in the military range of course. What are the markings? The anchor is not a military marking. Is it marked on the stock? Is it marked "United States Property". Be more specific.

Sorry, there is a problem with photobucket and I cannot restore deetailed pictures, but the stock is marked with Ord. Wheel the same as on 03A3 rifles, size is exactly the same as in Mr. Harrison's book. No USP markings, no anchor mark- just a symbol.

Is that a "PL" marking on the barrel? That would indicated a date of June 1942.

The Ord Wheel on the stock being the only martial mark on the gun is consistent with many Military Model 31 riot guns in that serial number range.
