i like the amount of hands on work they got...lots of sparks..

That's before people got lazy and only wanted paper pushing jobs and when Americans actually produced durable goods.

What is the purpose of the step where a tube is placed in the barrel bore and then a molten substanced used to seal it? pre-heat treat protection of the rifled bore, sealing prior to blueing or long-term storage of a finished barrel
i belive those are BAR barrels...not sure...maybe an annealment of some sort,, i was wondering that myself.
or Chrome lined...i havnt looked at a BAR barrel in a few years.

Those are BAR bbls , you can see the pressed on gas block in several views .
I don't think they had chroming back then. Could he be putting a lead plug in the bbl to seal it before bluing / parking ? There is a scene where they look to be pluging the gas port before putting it in a machine.
Chris
likely parked by 1918...pluging >??maybe so...doesnt look like whatever he,s dripping in the bore is hot,,no gloves...but men were men back then,..safety 3rd
