Richard, I think Chuck is pointing out that technically there is no such thing as a P-17. As soon as I saw the title of your post, I just knew someone would correct you. The British contracted with Winchester, and Remington (at their Eddystone, PA factory), to produce their Pattern 14 rifle. This rifle was chambered for the British .303 round. Previous British rifles were formally known as Short Magazine Lee Enfield rifles, SMLEs, or more commonly Enfields. So, the Pattern 14 rifle became known as the P-14 or P-14 Enfield.

When America entered the war, the production from these plants were changed to produce almost exactly the same rifles, only in .30-06 caliber. These rifles were officially known as the U.S. Model 1917. However, they continue to be called P-17, P-17 Enfield, or American Enfield. You are referring to it the way most people do. But, sometimes, particularly on gun forums, words matter.

I have been taught (corrected) many times, as we all have.

no,,i was being a smart ars,,..its a pet peeve...i dont collect British weapons..only U.S. , said rifle is a Model of 1917...even says so on the top of the ring...noplace does it say P17.. lol
    i rebarreled a 1917 for a guy a few years ago,.
when he called to pick up his rifle, he says, have my p17 done yet? i replied...no, i dont have a P17..he stumbled a while..
then said..didnt i drop off a P17? no you didnt..iv never had a P17 before..and dont know what that even is..
he say quiet for a min...he said...how bout a 1917? yup, have one of those.. done and ready for service...lol.

    I was told the 303 was a p14 and the 30-06 was a p17
