  1. Default Cut off switches?

So apprently I have an 1892 cut off and it cant be installed into an 1898 reciever.

Whats the rule with interchangeability of these cut offs? Later versions work in earlier models?
    but vice versa doesnt work?

If I do have the wrong one, would anyone mind a trade for the 1898 friendly cut off switch?

Here's the one I now have:

On the very early Krags, Springfield Armory hand fitted many of the parts. These parts were stamped with the serial number of the receiver. I have been away from Krags and collecting in general to remember if the cut-off's were hand fitted and numbered. I seen to recall that there were 3 different and distinct types of cut-off's, but without my books, I don't remember what was what. Somebody here will know for sure.

That I rememer, there are two variations of the early cut off (flat spring). The difference was the number of ridges on the edge. Tom Pearce and Bill Mook recorded a lot of great data on this sort of minutia, but alas this is not available.

The bottom line on fit is that the '98 cutoff has a shorter shaft and thus a shorter channel in the receiver. '98 will fit earlier but not the other way around.

LARscout, I have a '98 cutoff, and need one for a '92. If you want to trade, send me a PM.

I hate to butt in but you had perfect timing as I need one for my rifle and was just looking into it and found this thread. What I really need is help figuring what the one I need looks like. I am not a Krag collector but have two from movie studios. I kept saying I need to get the missing cut off and have to hunt a worn finish one. Any help with the style I will need would be appreciated. Thanks,,Rick

Rick, I'll try to take some pictures for you, I think its the rotation of where the shaft was cut in 1/2 thats the problem.
I simply cant rotate it in the 1898 cut off switch channel.
There is a guy that makes reproductions for about $20, I just cant find the link for it at the moment.

Can't rotate it, or cannot make it work as you feel it should? Shafts are all same diameter, though hole depths are not.

And, don't lose sight of the fact that shaft length is not the only difference in cutoffs - the flat is also oriented differently relative to the wing - the early ones stopped cartridge flow when "up", later ones when "down".
