    Default Special Buttplate?

Watching this auction, it went for a lot more than I expected. Not knowing much about these, is there anything special about this one that warranted the high selling price?

Only thing special I can see is the amount of remaining finish - so, I wonder if two bidders got into a $$$$ contest over it?

Thanks. Were the traps always case-hardened or were some blued?

Nice Krag buttplates aren't cheap but I see nothing there to justify that kind of price.

Agreed. That is the most common of the three Krag plates, and though the trap is stunning, the blue is well-worn. Well above average but I'm guessing it was one of those bidding war things. I also wonder how the trap stayed so nice. They were all originally cased, Mike - a blued one has been refinished.

Trap doors are case hardened. The door looks good, though one can get these recased.

Default Some were most definitely blued

I have examples of both, in better condition than that sample. I'll try to post some pics if I get the time.
