I went with that rear sight mainly because it fit, and it was only $35.00. Repro screws were approx. $8.00 and they fit perfectly. I only paid $150 for the carbine (it was mistakenly sold as a cut...

No, it's not marked as being a carbine sight. The holes line up perfectly (the holes in the barrel had been filled with set screws and some sort of filler).

I'm still working on the handguard and positioning the front sight...
The rear sight was from an 1892 Krag (according to the seller). The holes in the sight line up perfectly with the barrel mounting holes. I went with the 1903 front sight because the original front...
I had posted about this carbine when I first bought it. After some research, it was determined to be an 1896 carbine that had been "worked over."
I'll probably just leave the recoil pad.
...
I have an 1896 carbine that I'm restoring. So far, I replaced the saddle bar and ring with a reproduction. I put a 1903 front sight on it and an earlier Krag rear sight that fits perfectly. I put...
For what it's worth - neither the carbine or the rifle bolt would close on the Field headspace gauge.
I removed the barrel and frame from the stock and soaked the frame in a citrus degreaser in a bucket in my back yard. The only part I removed was the sideplate. I scrubbed the bore with this and...
I bought the parts from http://www.e-sarcoinc.com/krag.aspx
$40.95 shipped.
It's funny, but that's exactly what I paid for the 1896 carbine. They sold it as a cut-down rifle (different store) but info I got here confirmed that it was a carbine.
There's a firearms auction...
That is, hands down, the best, informative explanation I've seen. That little dim light in my head just came on fully. If I see it, I can understand it. Thanks for the info and the visual.
Good info. Thanks. I'll neck size the cases fired from the carbine and keep those fired in the rifle separate. And check for case expansion. From what I've read, the primers might back out under...
It took quite a bit of brain strain for me to grasp the simple concept of headspace (it's a noun and a verb which doesn't help). Now it's the actual measuring of headspace that's making me search,...
I bought a Field headspace gauge on ebay that's on its way.
That was an interesting experiment. My little Red Dot loads seem kinda puny and ...safe. Thanks for that link.
I picked up this latest 1898 Krag rifle at an antique shop for $150. The firing pin...
Thanks for the info. I'll test it with gasoline but it looks pretty good.
I was thinking the same thing about gunsmiths in my area (if I could find one). I'll keep the loads low and keep checking the lugs.
I have 2 Krags - an 1896 carbine that I've fired, and a recently acquired 1898 rifle that I have not fired yet.
I've inspected the bolt lugs on each through a magnifier and cannot see any problems,...
They have a barrel band at the lowest price I've seen. I'll give them a call. Thanks for the info.
Like I said, it's a real one that's been altered, and I want to restore it. Just looking for ideas and suggestions.
I just called tradenet about a barrel band they have - waiting for them to call back. Good site. Thanks.
The saddle ring is on its way. They said it's an exact copy of an original....
I have a Krag carbine, dated 1896 (serial #75050) that I posted about a week or so ago.
I've fired the Krag - the bore is shiny and nice. Now I want to do a restoration, at least a partial one....
It's a Lyman sight. How does it attach to the barrel?
No pitting in the bore, very good rifling. I was surprised at how bad that pic made the muzzle look.
I recently bought a Springfield Krag and I'm trying to figure out if it's a carbine, a cut-down carbine or a cut-down rifle. The stock has an old repair, the sights have been replaced with "modern"...
