I think the best advise I found on checking headspace is "go light and if the safety will not engage, the bolt is not closed and your HS is good with that gage."
Ladder was up, setting was on 300. 2" above POA @ 25yd. Wanted to get this rifle shooting just like my other 1917 which shoots POA/POI at 25yd using ladder up 300 setting.

They are actually referred to as "charger strips" in FM23-9 back from 1974. Ref page 17, para 2-12a(3)
On the side of M855 and M855A1 cans they are referred to as 10rd clips.
