I think we may be 'arguing around' terminology.
The SMLE .22rf was not originally designed to be used with a magazine, and the rifle was not 'issued' with a magazine.
The magazine was developed...
Just a slight correction - the ONLY Lee Enfield .22 trainer that was manufactured as original with a functioning magazine was the No7 Mk1.
There was another rifle made that some people confuse...
Firstly - is it a No1 or a No3 (very different rifles).
If it is a No1 Mk3 converted to .22rf then it becomes a No2 MkIV* (if it was a military conversion),
A lot of conversions were done by...
Thanks 5BATT - I was beginning to doubt my own rifles when Goo said that SMLEs dont have prefix letters.
Whilst not a huge number - every SMLE I have seen has had a prefix letter.
Are you thinking about the U that it is on the No4 rifles signifying South African ownership ?
Thanks for the photo...
Its the letter prefix.
Example :- Production would start at A0001 thru to A9999 then B0001 thru B9999 etc until they got to Uxxxx and your rifle was born.
Goo - can you re-post picture of the...
Just thought I'd check - as 'humping' is what a dog does to the leg of your guests when you are sat down for 'tea and crumpets'
Is "Humper" a colonial term for a 'Bitsa' ?
Do you mean that "Peddled Scheme" was actually marked on the rifle ?
As has been previously said, WW2 production of BSA rifles was 'Dispersed' (to minimise bomb-damage) Components were...
But the civilian Aussies do have No4's and that dealer is not only selling No4 barrels, but is looking to get No1 (SMLE) barrels manufactured
Criterion and Armalon are both planning to produce No4 barrels.
Armalon are already in production.
Price released as US$800
Here is a link to their Australian distributor (Aus $850 + fitting)...
Any firearm, or pressure bearing part of a firearm, sold in the Uk, in the civilian market must be prooved before sale.
It is quite legal to own a non-prooved firearm in the UK, but you cannot sell...
You cannot accurately use them to identify a year- the proof marks cover several years

From my reading of the various articles and reports the "problem" is that the Canadian Government is insisting that the rifles are manufactured by Colt Canada - who have no experience in doing this...

Germany, Austria and Italy are standing together in the middle of the pub when Serbia bumps into Austria and spills Austria’s pint.
Austria demands Serbia buy it a whole new suit because of...
I simply pointed out the price differential on the L39 because virtually every other rifle / model tends to be around 50% more expensive in the UK (depending on the $ to £ exchange rate - late...
Most of our Enfields ended up in the USA, yes the L39s are available in the US, but for some unexplainable reason they are considerably more expensive than in the UK
(UK price $900-$1500)
This...
The L39 is the military (Army and Air Force) target rifles, they are manufactured as 7.62 on No4 actions.
The military's sniper rifle was the No4T (in 303) and served until the early 70's. This...
Simply ID denoting which factory the parts were made in
M / MA is the Lithgow factory
OA is the "Orange Feeder Factory"
I dont know of a single website that will answer your question - many...
In the UK the L39 are about £600-£1000, whilst the L42 is around £7500+
The first (approximately) 130,000 Savage No4's were manufactured the same as the UK production with the bolt head release 'button' just by the charger bridge, these are marked No4 Mk1.
In order to...
Savage made over 1.1 million rifles in about 4 years- they are very, very common. Lithgow made 616,000 between 1913 and 1953.
An American will say the Savage is worth more, the rest of the world...
