Tudorp summed it up. Some of my favorite user knives are pieces that would make some collectors cry. They're still doing what they were made for and not one drop of guilt on my part.
You did...
I'm not saying that everything packed in cosmoline got this greenish tint. But every metal item I've seen that acquired this tint had previously been stored in cosmoline.
What's an M8 bayonet?
As far as the blade marked Camillus NY- U.S.M.C. They made them in WW2 and reproduced the knife starting in the mid 90's until they closed in 2006, (stock number 5685) . Might need some good...
It's really a tricky thing. I've tried to research the best way to preserve leather and I've come to believe it's pretty much a case by case approach. I also think the best approach answer is...
This may sound stupid, but If I was going to try and preserve the leather washers. I would put some Elmers glue, (white), at the cracks. Wipe the excess off with a damp,(with water), cloth. If you...
If your going to be asking questions in these details, one place you should be aware of is linked to below:

On the one hand there are plenty of references in personal stories of front line G.I.'s having items like brass knuckles, and blackjacks, etc. On the other hand that doesn't mean they were issued. ...
Might contact this place too.

Thank for clearing that up for me. Not too surprised that old stories tend to stay around well after new information has come to light. Part of the reason I tend to concentrate on only a few things...
I'm not up on the M1880's. Doesn't the Varney come along after the change over to brass guards? I'm with you that I wouldn't get rid of either sheath for a blade that is that old, unless I was...
Might be time to change your approach to the problem.

I would call the knives made pre-war by Union Cutlery, (KaBar), are pretty comparable to others like Marbles, Case, Western, etc. Of the four mentioned Western got into the fixed blade knife game...
From the markings you listed it sounds like your bayonet was originally a PAL made Model 1942, 16 inch blade. (Speculation), the KM 10058 may refer to when the bayonet was modified to 10 inch blade....
Looks like you have two U.S.G.I. M8/M8A1 sheaths and two Korean sheaths.
The M1 bayonet cut down to 6†is probably a Korean item. So in this case the Korean sheath is a nice match to the...
Glad to see that things are working out better than you expected. I'm thinking that the final price could be a good bit higher that what you have with three days to go. Time will tell. Look at it...
I think you made a great choice back then. It does happen to be one of my favorite designs. For a fixed blade knife I think it's just pure elegant. ...
I’m posting this on behalf of my late FIL. He was a glider pilot in the AAF during WW2. Before the invasion of Normandy he procured this knife from a survival pack that was part of the CG-4A...
Those Germans must have a favorite penetrating oil they like to use. As them what they like to use on rusty lug nuts.
IMHO the fact that it's branded "Craftsman" would mean that it was made for Sears to sell thru their stores. Further I believe this would rule it out as having been a Government contract item.
I would get a penetrating oil on the mechanism. Do you see any signs of rust around the catch? Kroil is my favorite for getting deep into places. If you don't have that you should be able to get...
They vary quite a bit depending on condition of the piece and specific details regarding the assembly of the knife which reflects the specific time frame, (even during WW2), that the knife was made....
Pictures will help in trying to ID your bayonets. In the meantime here’s a picture from one of Gary Cunningham’s articles on the M4’s that may show what your referring too.

Richard,
I certainly understand what your saying. I’ve seen this before and it’s kind of like your D’ed if you do and your D’ed if you don’t.
A fellow member of...
