Thanks Guys, I appreciate the info!
Opened it up. Here is what I found. At first, it looked like brass case, but I'm sure it's steel that has turned color a bit. Most inside are head stamped ECS 4, at least I think that's an S, Thought...
I guess that's why I'm stumped. No other marking on the can except ::45 on the end. I looked it over really good. I'll open it up later today and let you know what I find.

Just wondering if anyone out there has opened up a can like the one I have pictured? If so, could you let me know what you found inside? I'm thinking about opening mine, but just not sure if I...
Thanks for the info. milgunsguy!
Actually, I'm just trying to see if it can be sold as a C&R. The book probably costs more than the rifle is worth ;-)
I have a Marlin 99 that has no serial number and was wondering if anyone can help me with the date of manufacture? I did find some info on Wikipedia that stated the following:
"The Model 99 was...
Interesting, never heard of that. Thanks for the info.
I ran across a couple of stocks and wondered if anyone has seen them before, or has any knowledge to share.
One looks like a WW2 M1 stock, but wasn't quite finished and was turned into something...
Just bought it. Can't wait to get started!
True, as seen in the pictures of the late M40 that you provided in the link. The link to the NRA Museum has pictures of what looks like an early M40 with the "green" Redfield, but the base has...
I notice that this one has a scope base with rounded corners, rather that the squared off 40x base. Interesting! Maybe I don't have to look so hard for a 40x base!
Just curious, has anyone ever seen one of these? It is made by Redfield, but looks similar to a Unertl. I've never seen one before. Anyone know what rifles they were used on?

I have two bolts that came from 1967 circa Rem. 700 SA rifles. One was in a Feb. 67 date coded rifle and the other in Dec. 67 rifle. Both appear to be identical. The earlier one, an ADL, only has...
Thanks. It sounds like they may have changed sometime in 1967.
I have two 6 digit Remington 700 receivers, a 266,xxx and a 321,xxx, which I am planning on using for an M40 and an M40A1 build. Both trigger assemblies appear to be identical, except for the sears....
Was the front swivel a wood screw type like the rear, or threaded into a "nut" ?
On a side note, I just picked up a mid 80's Remington 541x, it has a rear swivel that is identical to my '43 513T...
I recently purchased a McMillan stock for my M40A1 project. It came with 1&1/2 in. Wichita swivels. From what I have read, original M40A1's had 1&1/4 in. swivels. Can anyone confirm this? It seems...
Can you post a few pictures?
Yea, that's me over on Sniper's Hide. I'm going into M40 info. overload! It sure is a lot of fun though and I'm learning a lot. Thanks to everyone here for all of the great info. shared. Maybe one...
Thanks again Dan. My barrel is on the way from Douglas. I don't know if it will have the bevel, but if not, I'm sure TBA can put the right one on.
Greg
Louis, what barrel are you using for your build?
Thanks, appreciate it!
Dan,
Thanks for posting the great pictures. Any chance you could post a picture of the muzzle?
Thanks, Greg
Thanks Dan and Marty!
Thanks Marty, I didn't even think of Boyd's.
I would like to see color pictures of the metal on an original rifle. It's hard to tell, in black and white, how dark the park. is on the barreled...
