butlersrangers and Parashooter,
Thanks for the replies. Sad to hear about Mr. Schwartz.
Parashooter I liked your comment: "The project is time-consuming. I recall it took most of a day."

S&S has not had any handguards since COVID. Neither has Antique Guns LLC. COVID is hurting all the small businesses.
Butlersrangers, how about the feasibility of converting a M1903 or A3 handguard...
The recruiter lied!
Interesting that you should post about the early .223 magazines. Yesterday I was digging through an old foot locker and buried on the bottom was one of my old Sp1 magazines. I was surprised because I...
My 71 SP1 came with 2 blocked magazines marked .223. Since Washington state did not allow any large or medium game hunting with .223 (at that time) I saw no sense in the blocks and removed them. They...
If your question was for me then ,yes, it had the cross cannons and FJA stamp but the OG was on the left butt.
Lenny,
In 1971 I purchased an M1903A3 from a man that had acquired it from the NRA. He had never fired it and it was still packed in cosmoline. Its serial number was 3452830. Close to the one you...
I purchased a Booher hand guard from Springfield Sporters some years ago but unfortunately like most of my rifles they are gone. Here's a picture from the internet of a Booher handguard.

Ok, here's a picture of my handguard. Unfortunately, it is cracked towards the front end. This picture should show the groove clearer. Hope it helps.

Wow, this is an old thread. Sorry about the "Checks in the mail" comment about posting pictures later. I forgot, then life got crazy. I've gone through 3 computers since then and unfortunately lost...

Have the Marines ever listed any low number M1903 failures as the US Army Ordnance did? They never turned in their low number receivers so I would imagine that they had their fair share of failures....
Ok, got it.
I found this picture in a weapons book of a P14. While not the greatest picture , it does show a bulge in the stock behind the grasping grooves. Somewhat reminiscent of a bulge in the magazine area...
Double Heat Treated = DHT
When the problems with the low numbered receivers came to light, the two armories started double heat treating the metal in the rifles. This gives the metal a hard surface...
Interesting to note that the cities and states these old advertisements come from are now rabidly anti-gun.
This is such a sticky wicket!

This is a 1903A3 barrel attached to a low number SA receiver. Can anyone identify the two "cross patee" (iron cross) stamps on the barrel?
TIA

I found the image on Bing images when I looked up "frozen mules". This image of a frozen donkey showed, so I used it. Never looked it up but just figured it was a statue of a donkey with snow on it.
The mule's "giddy up go" got up and went .... no anti-freeze!

Yep, I bought a SP1 in '71 that had 2 blocked magazines. The instruction booklet told you how to remove the spring steel block by taking off the floor plate. Only installed for hunting purposes much...
