Thanks gents, I've been working at this as a fun way to put some of the information and documents from my archives trips out there. One thing that has become very enjoyable (and expensive) is getting...
I'm having a hard time seeing anything but an M1903 scoped with an A5. Perhaps the photo uploaded a bit pixilated?
Archival documents we have found show Niedner began his main mounting run in May (some were done considerably earlier), and finished in early June. He was paid before the 5th Marines, who sailed...
Gunner Estock and Sgt LeValley came from regular duties in Cuba to HQ Company, Overseas Depot in Quantico in June of 1918. Gunner Estock was an instructor at this course, and both men would transfer...
anvilring- does this rifle have the extra gas escape hole, colloquially known as a Hatcher Hole on the port side of the receiver? Included is a pic of one for reference, it is the hole you see right...
On the more used ones I've had, a warping/curvature is prone to develop. The sling is totally fine and functional itself, but the warping is quite noticeable.

Louis,
According to the Hussa/Blanchard report, a report on logistics and supply particularly in the regards of weaponry, the 1st Marine Division was wholly resupplied by the army following...
What an incredible find, thanks for sharing!
Lucked into this sling on eBay a month ago! Fits nicely into the collection.

I have a scant stock that came on a Marine 03 that is basically flat on the bottom, sort of like a Winchester Carbine stock. Not sure if I like that feel or not, but definitely an interesting feature!
Good deal, not many times you see an SRS hit!
Looks like we'll both have some new 1903s to post pics of soon, I didn't even think to see who I was bidding against!
Off the SRS alone its impossible to say. If it has Marine finish, a Hatcher Hole, vice marks on the barrel, stippled butt plate etc then there is a good possibility it was USMC.

No SRS hit, but its in very good company
It looks ok to me, but like everyone says, this is one of those deals where its really hard to tell. I think for the build you are working on it will work out great though. Definitely looking forward...
Do you have any pics of the rifle? That may help in any possible identification.
I won the auction for the rifle originally mentioned in this post, been looking for an SRS hit for a long time. Besides the Hatcher Hole and typical WWII rebuild USMC finish, it has the Rockwell...
I was with Cpl Norton when we came across this rifle on Saturday. Very glad to see it go to an owner that will give this old, salty piece of Corps history the proper home it deserves!
Awesome story southfork, thanks for sharing! If I ever run across that serial number, I'll definitely get in touch!
To try to clear the air (but likely muddy the water) about all of this, there are legitimate reasons why the Marines of the 1st Marine Division stormed ashore with their trusty Oh-Three's, and none...
Nice rifle Mike! A lot of us on here are big fans of USMC 1903s.
No hit, but not far off from the only rifle in the 327,xxx range:

Wow, clearly we should have just dropped tons of chicken **** all over the Axis lines, it would have rendered the wood on their rifles useless and their weapons would have had to have been discarded...
Two?
