The clamping band was reused from the M1863 rifle musket that had its stock reconfigured to M1868/70.
That’s likely a Schuyler Hartley & Graham re-build using a surplus narrow receiver and a Remington 5-groove barrel.
My “expert” photo setup: take outdoors in bright shadow or a cloudy days, to give diffuse light and minimize glare, bright spots and shadows. Place gun on a white window shade (roll up type),...
Nice!
Is that a “new” not conversion stock? I don’t see a ramrod spoon pin.
Dick - is your annual production and serial number tally by calendar or fiscal year?
This is the centerfire cartridge.
Provenance, provenance. What was the name of the collector?
I don’t see the hole in the stock for a pin to hold a ramrod spoon, between the breech and barrel band. A hint that could mean it’s not a cut down rifle musket stock.
Kragrifle, Can you comment on the apparent length differences of the forestock in front of the band? Are the barrels the same length with the same type crown?
From the info I’ve seen, and the examples I have handled (and 1 I have) these are not Springfield Armory cadets. There is no mention of any but one example in armory quarterly reports. The quality...
Just the lock is worth that price. Good parts gun.
The halfcock safety feature was designed by W.S. Smoot, patent no. 120,788. A former ordnance officer, he was at that time in the employment of Remington.
The correct Cadet bayonet is the Model 1867. Besides the shorter, narrower blade, the socket bore is smaller than the M1855. This type fits the Springfield Models 1867, 1869 and Navy 1867 Cadet...
Dick,
You'll remember from other discussions elsewhere that New York dealer James Frazier also assembled trapdoors in the 1880s, and that Schuyler, Hartley & Graham had Remington making up trapdoors...
Actually, the Japanese Army bought P-Ms directly from the US as a stopgap measure while the factory began Murata production. These were rifles the Providence Tool Co. had withheld from Turkey...
Yes. It's encyclopedic in extent and detail on the bayonets, with good info on the rifles as well. Recommended.

It is more likely that the trapdoors with with barrels having 5-groove rifling, like this low numbered one, are from aftermarket/assembled rifles from New York dealer Harley & Graham.

Hello m1903rifle-
Some questions:
What is the bottom finial (the knob) made of?
What are the dimensions (diameter, length) of the tubes? It looks like the tubes are longer than the Spencer...
Yes, NY used its own unique configuration Remington rolling block rifle in .50-70 Government. It has a 36" barrel, and a notably high hammer.
200 of these short rifles came from NYC dealer Schuyler, Hartley & Graham, not Bannerman.
On May 11, 1878, SH&G sold 100 "Allin Rifles & Bayts [sic] Bright 50/70 Refinished," to dealer E.E. Eaton in...
Yes. Ordnance Circular No. 42, Series of 1864, gave instructions on how to ID the various models when ordering replacement parts.
The "Model 1863" had "Bands oval and open, with band screws; some...
That's a M1855/61/63 trigger bow and swivel, according the the "Table Showing Changes...Rifle-Musket From 1855 to 1873," (Fuller, p295). A blued one is M1863. A "standard" M1868 would have had a...
Yes, the M 1863 was the one with blued split bands. There were a lot of Springfield parts left over because this model was the one used for M1868/70 stocks, since the middle band did't need to be...
