GREAT link, JB. The repro's have been around long enough they are starting to get enough age patina that they are harder and harder to tell from the real ones.

M49 scopes were still the TE item for sniper teams when I retired from the Corps in 1997.
Are you talking about the Mississippi rifle with the repro long scope on it? I only heard the first year he didn't take a shot with it.
I haven't spoken with Jim in a few years since I moved from...
BTW Jim,
Dempsey Damron was the NCOIC of the Rifle Team Armorers in 1975 along with Ted Hollabaugh, who took over as NCOIC not long after Camp Perry. Mike Giingher was the other Armorer. Bill...
Jim,
I don't know if we have ever met or not. I enlisted at age 17 on the Delayed Entry Program while I was a Senior in High School in 1971 and went to boot Camp 6 days after my 18th birthday. ...
Charlie Lauer was a Master Gunnery Sergeant on THE USMC (summer) Rifle Team when I joined it as a Sergeant and the Junior RTE Armorer in 1975. He was not an RTE Armorer, but his background was as a...
I have Mr. Clarks 03 book in my library. Through another good friend, Mr. Clark sent it to me as a gift with a hand written message to me personally inside. Sad to hear of his passing. Sincerest...
Marty,
Sorry I missed your personal message for a while. Just got done sending you the second reply with some information for you.
John, I agree that's the way to go. If I were going to make a repro M40, I would try to find a period factory "Varmint" barreled .308 as those barrels were actually used in M40 production. Failing...
I can't completely speak to the sling swivels on M40's as I didn't come into the Marine RTE field until 1973 when I began my MOS 2112 OJT. They were working on the M40A1 while I was going through...
To save dollars, I would suggest buying a used rifle with a good .308 "Varminter" barrel on it. Most of these were never shot that much and are just broken in and not worn out.
