Did a little goohoo-ing, and the 2 rifles transferred from USS Breese to Epic 73, *MIGHT* have been transferred to a US Navy depot or unit at Noumea, New Caledonia, as the code name for the Noumea area is listed as EPIC as mentioned in a these entitled The Construction of Airfields during the New Georia Campaign of 1943-44: Lessons Learned by the United States Naval Construction Battalions by Joseph C. Zimmerman page 34 "A response to the 47th from the Bureau of Yards and Docks addresses this issue advising that 'spare parts have been and are being shipped to the spare parts depots located at EPIC (Noumea, New Caledonia) and EBON (Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides), in large quantities.' "
Hope this helps.

Isn't this rifle on gunbroker right now ?
I would be curious if this rifle has vise marks on the barrel. That barrel date is about the changeover when they stopped getting barreled receivers from the Army and started to get loose barrels.
So I would be curious if this did have vise marks.
For what it's worth, neither of my 1.02 with 2$ or 28 barrels have vice marks.
I'm thinking more and more the vice marks were only present on rifle barrels that were replaced in the 40s.
