Well, certainly one of my favorites, the late great Donna Summer.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Glgzy_q2Zc

This is Summer in her later years.

There are some younger people we've unofficially adopted. One is a young lady who once had aspirations of a singing career. We showed her this video and she said "that is tight." I haven't heard anybody say "tight" in 50 years and then mostly from west coast guys I knew in the army but in this case it fits.

After she died Rush Limbaugh on his show said he'd met her when she sat next to him on a flight. Limbaugh said she was a lovely and gracious lady. She also had a great voice and could really sell a song.

She was my brothers favorite singer at the time.

Like the Bee Gee's though (and others) she turned to Disco which was an immediate turn off for me.

Everyone's music taste is different so I'm not being critical. For me I always liked a soft, feminine sound in girl singers like Olivia Newton John and Mary Hopkins though she sounds like a Disney chipmunk.

Linda Rhondstat. Never a bad note from her, much less a bad song. Annie Lennox. Just a superb vocalist in every respect. Also Joan Osborn. Really like her take on "What Becomes of the Broken Hearted." Sincerely. bruce.

A tough question for me- I have a lot of faves.

For dynamic range (yes, that's a real thing) toss up between Grace Slick and Janis Joplin.

Somebody already mentioned Linda Rondstadt who not only sang her own, but was backing vocals on heck of a lot of other peoples records~ often uncredited. Solid work ethic there.

Of course Tina Turner, especially with some of her later material.

Wife and I had a greatest of Patsy Cline on cassette tape that got played an awful lot on long highway trips.

There's tons more worth mentioning...

I like to remember these young Ladies as they were in their prime.
I don't need to see them in their nineties.
Give them the respect they earned.

Not necessarily my favorite, but . . . .
Who could forget Whitney Houston’s National Anthem rendition at a Super Bowl?

Re: Whitney Houston. Simply a remarkable vocalist. IIRC her range was about four octaves! Without a doubt few have or ever will match her. Sincerely. bruce.

She was kind of unusual, but I liked Cyndi Lauper. She had a heck of a voice too. She did some really nice songs and when I saw her do Money changes everything on MTV I was impressed with her stage show. She had the real New York twang.

A lot of Ronstadt fans here, well, I'm one too. I love her "Back in the USA in which she had one of the greatest backup groups of all time (see how many you recognize.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xG8aRijTv3U

Her duet with Aaron Neville has to be the greatest duet in pop music of any flavor. I thought I put it on the playlist for our 50th anniversary party but somehow I didn't...oh well.

The nice thing about a thread like this is you not only are reminded of really fine singers you've forgotten like Suzy Bogguss but also others you've heard of but never actually heard like Kate Bush. Speaking of this Bogguss song, I'm a sucker for a good Rodeo song.

My first introduction to her was off the "Common Thread" Eagles covers album, which really deserves mention.
Her take on "Take It to The Limit" not only respected the original- she gave it some life that The Eagles couldn't on vocals.
That album should be required listening for anyone- there's other female artists on there well worthy of note.

Most of the singers listed here, I have never heard of their names nor have I ever heard their songs.

Kitty Wells, Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, Dolly Parton, Tammy Wynette, Reba McEntire. Are 100X more talented!

not really,

but that is subjective,

I actually enjoy Portishead (lead singer is female, Beth Gibbons) and Bjork, but figured some here may not enjoy them

Irving Berlin wrote a song a long time ago during the first world war, 1918, and it lay unpublished until a girl singer convinced him that she wanted to sing it. It became a big hit and rivals the National Anthem on popularity. Kate Smith sang "God Bless America" and the song is credited to her as her trademark song.

All the singers above came much later, but I'll bet everyone of them sang Kate Smith's song at one time or another. No matter who sings it, if it is sung seriously, I get goosebumps.

Ahhh, Wolfman Jack. Used to listen to him in the evening on the radio as we cruised around town. The station was only available at night and came from a high powered transmitter.

Anne Murray is one of my favorites.

I caught that too.

Felt funny mentioning it, so said nothing.

Personally, I do try to keep an open mind on music- it does need creativity to survive as an art form without stagnating.
With that in mind, there are some genre's that are completely over my head and beyond me, which is actually o.k.
I'm fortunate in that I have a fairly well rounded collection here that still has some un-heard material on it.

Now for a good set of phones :p

My own favorite is probably Lady Day - Billie Holiday. There were some others ... my own mother, for one. She could SING! Then there is Doris Day (I'm not kidding, she was pretty good) and Peggy Lee. Anita O'Day, Ella, Dinah Washington, and ARETHA! Damn! There's a few for you.
