The attached video relates to the Canadian ban of the Ruger No. 1 single shot rifle. The loophole, if you want to call it that, pertains to firearms that discharge projectiles delivering over a certain amount of energy at the muzzle. We're not talking field artillery here or even .50 BMG but commonly produced firearms in calibers used to take very large, or very dangerous game, ie .460 Weatherby Magnum. The rifle manufacturer doesn't even need to have made the rifle in one of these cartridges, the fact that some person at some time built a rifle chambered for such a cartridge will do the trick and cause all rifles in that model to be banned. This is sort of like the BATFE ban on ChiCom steel core 7.62x39mm ammo in this country because someone once made a pistol chambered in that caliber.

That's not all that they are trying to ban. They have published a list several hundred pages long that bans pretty much everything that is semi auto as well as a bunch of firearms that didn't meet their all-encompassing definition of semi auto. Basically, they are planning to ban a huge number of shotguns and hunting rifles, even if the Cabinet minister says that that is not the intention. The effect of this is to deepen the split between rural and urban people and between people living in Western Canada and those in the East, Just guess where the Liberal Government has its greatest electoral strength. It seems that several provinces have told the prime minister that they are not prepared to assign police resources to execute this proposed legislation.

They have already banned the sale of all handguns.

Our only practical hope is that the leader of the New Democratic Party which is supporting the Liberal minority government will realize that he is being played for a fool and will vote down the government. I strongly suspect that a new election will see the Liberals tossed out of power and replaced with the Conservatives

Just sales banned or ownership too?

They are talking about a billion dollar buy-back program so I suspect that their objective is ownership.

Sounds like pennies on the dollars to me. In other words "theft".

Here, I'm sure a billion dollars wouldn't cover a small city or large town.

What is interesting is that a lot of Liberal and New Democrat (i.e. Socialist) Members of Parliament are not supporting the Liberal Government on this issue. Most people realize that this is just the Liberal Government doing what its always done on firearms - punishing the innocent because its easier than dealing with the guilty.

The Oregon courts have just put a stay on the law. The more I find out about it the more it sounds like a back door out and out gun ban, at least for new purchases, hopefully it won't stand judicial scrutiny. I've also heard the lines are long at Oregon gun stores today.

Victim disarmament doesn't do anything but increase violence on the part of the guilty -- but it makes liberals feel all warm and cozy.
