The early microbes that inhabited Earth basically farted themselves to death. They were small, but there were a LOT of them. Oxygen and iron. The banded rock they found in Michigan can be found all over the world. I have a chunk of it myself. If you watch a really detailed story about the history of early life on earth it will make your eyes go out of focus. I'm not a student of this stuff but it is interesting. There were about five different die-offs that just about cleansed the planet of life.
