I have a Springfield trapdoor rifle 1873 Serial: 316394 does it show up in any of the books?
your help would be great appreciated.

Does your rifle, by any chance, have a sliding combination cleaning rod & bayonet? That number is right in the range where they occur.

5035150350Well, then, you have an "interesting" piece! With that serial number, it almost certainly WAS one of the 1000 Model 1884 Experimenal Rod-bayonet rifles. Nearly all of them were converted to the standard "production" M1888 rod-bayonet rifles such as yours. The conversions are not WORTH anything more, but they DO have that interesting little cachet. Unaltered versions are EXTREMELY rare today - probably no more than 25-50 escaped. In the photo the rare version is on the left, standard on the right. Added better picture - sorry was lazy at first. They LOOK very similar but nearly everything is different. There is more wood in the rare stock, so fakery is basically impossible.
