Do you have the magazine boxes or other pack saddle set up.Those cases are impressive and as you say if you only had what goes in it.An itch I'll never scratch most likely even in the semi version.

I've noticed several of these on the market lately, any clue as to where from?

"...HUGE!! WWII leather gun case..." Your pictures are certainly HUGE. Please reduce the size. Pictures that big take a very long time to load for a dial up member.
It's an M1 Rifle vehicle scabbard. Motorcycles, jeeps, etc.
"...Now to get what belongs in there..." Don't have an M1? CMP. Jump the hoops and shoot the matches even if you don't have to. You'll meet some of the best people you'll ever meet, who will bend over backwards to help you. http://www.thecmp.org/

Sure a M1 Garand would fit, but it's designed for something a bit larger.....
I have one, missing the metal bracket though & stitching is come loose in a couple spots. Found it at a Flea market a couple years ago.

Yes it certainly is.It was part of a pack saddle set up for the BAR with the saddle and extra magazines in magazine boxes and other BAR paraphenalia. There was a similiar setup for the Browning machine gun.

Have heard that they were also mounted in Half-tracks to carry the BAR.

If anyone can find a picture showing use on a vehicle I would like to see it.Interested in seeing how they fastened it to the vehicle as to wether there was a vehicle mount using the brackets on the case.

Look at how well made it is! We have lost so much transforming society to an economy based on disposable goods. The only things I own right now that I am reasonably confident will still be here in 70 years were all made 70 years ago.

You are exactly right, this is a half track case for a BAR, WWII

These BAR cases were originally designed for use with the M1924 Phillips Pack Saddle for the Cavalry. They're different models and equipment for the M1918 BAR,M1917 MG,and pack artillery models. Here's a couple of links with pictures.Bipod equiped models will not fit these cases.

Like the M1938 M1 Rifle scabbard, equipment originally designed for use by the Cavalry and horses, the usage changed as the modes of transportation changed.
