My next door neighbor’s father brought this Rifle home from WW2. There are no markings on the rifle except the serial number. Her father is deceased so I can’t ask him. What is it? Any information appreciated. It’s a small caliber, 49 1/4” Long. Barrel is about 31”.

The term sniper back then was used a lot. Any semi accurate rifle fire over a machine gun was always nicknamed "Sniper fire."

Some GI's called any Japanese 6.5mm rifle a "sniper rifle". That one shows no evidence of having been a sniper rifle.

Just to clarify it’s a Type I not 1.

"...The term sniper back then was used a lot..." Yep. Anybody firing on the troopies, accurate rifle fire or not, was called sniper fire.
