Good read Ken, looks like Naval museum, tons of history. My dad took shore leave in St. John a couple of times during WWII

Now that is one place I would like to visit!! Had two relatives who were in MM. Only one was an officer, tho.

That's a great story. Also I note that "guests are welcome" I think I'll try and spend some time there next time I'm in Newfoundland.

HS teacher was an Ens. in the Armed Guard. His war story was about dropping a 3" shell during a drill and spending the rest of the voyage with his troops rather leery of him.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Stephen_Hopkins. What they went through. Morison called it 'the last old time sea battle'.

Newfoundland wasn't part of Canada until 1949. It'd be an RN Mess.
"...looks like Naval museum..." Most Messes are like that. "Officer's Club" is an American term.
"...Most of the convoys left from Newfoundland..." Halifax. Not St. John's.

I wonder if any of the WWII officers who visited there could make it up the steps now? Regards, Clark
