You know, it really is a shame that there are so many 'con artists looking to get some stolen valor', that it takes 80 or 90 years of digging to prove a man and his squad did 'actually' do what they said they did... And i will bet you that they 'did not' do it for the recognition but for their brothers to their left and right...

Thanks for the reminder of Sgt. York's courage under fire. There is great information on the archeological search to locate the exact locations where York made his stands which you can find by clicking the links listed in Reference #106 and #111 in the Notes section of Wiki article, the latter of which provides photos of his spent .45 rounds which were found where he fended off the bayonet charge, and photos of the -06 cases found where he took out the machine gun position. Fascinating stuff.
