My buddy ED brought over this Longbranch tonight and I got a couple of pictures. I told him I would ask some experts what they could tell us about it.

Hopefully this works out, I will give Ed the CSP address and maybe he will join us. Ed is a good guy.

Nice. Looks like it may have spent some loving time as a range rifle. King screw swivel and the screw in the left buttsocket etc.
What sight did it used to wear? Wearing a MkIII stamped sight now.
What is the year date? Can't quite make it out.

Hi JB,

It is stamped 1950. Ed was told that it had been a DCRA rifle ( I think he just bought it and paid about $600.00 US) and the one I have has Parker Hale sights. The stock doesn't sit right. Also I am guessing that the King screw swivel is the unused swivel that is triangular?

Thanks

Ken,

The term King Screw is just a collector slang term for the main screw. The screw's torque setting is commonly called 'gorilla tight' :) It's a rotating target swivel with the offset to accommodate "wrapping in". Very similar to the swivels seen on the No4T sniper rifles and others.
I am by no means any expert and the DCRA/target rifles have always been outside my main area of interest. So, I'll defer to others for their experience with them.

Cheers,

JB

"...has Parker Hale sights..." I think all DCRA rifles had Parker Hale's. Anyway, post war Long Branch rifles were the best Lee-Enfields ever made. How many grooves? Some of 'em had 6.
You still have to check the headspace.

Good advice on HS testing. I just bought an Okie coin-style HS field gauge for my No. 4 .303 cal. that doesn't require disassembling the bolt. It has a hole for the striker and a notch for the extractor. It's dimention is .074" which is British mil spec.

He has taken it to a gun smith and got a clean bill of health, should be pulling the trigger next week on our hunting trip.

Good luck on the trip. I trust he'll be pulling the trigger for the first time at a range so he'll know how the rifle performs at various distances.

Technically, Ken, it's the gun case that is on the new kitchen counter. Why don't you test the waters by field-stripping the rifle directly on to the counter surface and send pictures.

Sorry. didn't notice that this was an older post
